Commercial Preparations and Therapeutic Applications: Although the administration of medicinal mushrooms has an established history of use in traditional oriental therapies, commercially prepared aqueous extracts which focuses on polysaccharopeptides obtained from Coriolus Versicolor have been found to be of the highest therapeutic value. The best known commercial polysaccharopeptide preparations of Coriolus Versicolor are polysaccharopeptide Krestin (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide PSP. Both products are obtained from Coriolus versicolor mycelia, with PSK being the Japanese product and PSP the Chinese product. Both products are obtained by batch fermentation with PSK being produced from CM-101 and PSP from Cov-1 strains of Coriolus Versicolor. PSK is recovered via a hot water extract of the biomass by salting it out with Ammonium Sulphate, whereas PSP is recovered via alcoholic precipitation from the hot water extract. Both aqueos extracts, although structurally different, exhibit similar physiological activities.  In addition to the clinically tested PSK and PSP preparations, numerous Coriolus Versicolor formulations and extracts are on the market and sold in various forms (capsules, tablets, syrups, teas etc) and under many brand names.
